3/18/2010 Newer set exploring the perspective angle
Less focused on tying into transmitting the market these new “sketches” stand more on originality of thinking with art metaphors, that tune into the creative aspects of New Perspective’s business.
This week’s research
Research — looked at potential clients as opposed to competition. After early research on competing consultants you can quickly see there’s not really a design standard established. Many of the competing companies are either single individuals with a very basic internet presence and DIY branding or corporate boutique consulting services that target this segment.
Side note: lots of older html based templates, makes them seem less up-to-date, good branding could give someone an easy boost.
- The potential in the category to make a splash. Companies likely rely on strong word of mouth in making the choice.
- This less than current web platforms on a b2b site in the category is counter too establishing a strong presence in an industry where the internet is a growing component.
- Those who enter the market with strong branding will easily stand apart and put them more on the level of their potential clients online.
- Speaking engagements and presentations would help spread word of mouth better.
- Good potential that a site with often updated content and firm case studies would help confirm expert status within network
Design notes
- Use of RGB color scheme very popular and confers quick read broadcasting business’
- Strong uses of TV box shape — but since the shape of TV is changing do we extend that symbology — it it dated? Are TV shapes now simply round corner shapes with a picture frame inside, no dials. I-pad
- Expression of either digital aspects or broadcast spectrum
- Russian TV nice basic logos, Swiss and Latin countries also have strong design bent
- The stations do have a more contemporary bent than the consultants to the industry — even smaller countries have well designed logos
Stylistic ideas
1st Round layouts
Top Left — very contemporary style, easy to read metaphor (too easy), may be too obvious
Top Right — again eye metaphor
Bottom Left — modern style typographic solution
Bottom Right — variation of left with TV shape
Odds and ends — mostly type and some shape explorations — not fully-formed logos per se
Inspirations
There are many ways to go here. Whether it’s to emphasize the market or the expertise. Pulled to research on Maholy Nagy and Josef Albers for inspiration but haven’t yet found a way to incorporate it.
Look at Bauhaus - might be good stylistic fit, could confer inventive thinking
Technology of broadcast - easy read stays within category metaphors
Perspective could be interesting but have yet to find right shape. Explored using NP but just not working. Keep working
Summary — Not sure any of these are a perfect fit, though I personally thought the top left had a nice clean contemporary feel. We can use the following layouts and research to help help determine tone and eliminate stylistics issues that aren’t a good fit.
Very fun subject and many more ideas could be spun off.
A 2nd round could be more focused on the Perspective metaphor.
